A Letter To Myself
Dear Corey,
I see you’re now 20 years old,
Wow, you’re all grown up,
With the rest of your life to unfold,
Your life could have been better,
If you done well in school,
But you chose to be the clown,
The funny class fool,
So Corey was it worth it?
Skipping maths class?
At least now you have matured,
An adult at last,
Shame you don’t have many qualifications,
Because you could go far,
But I do still believe,
That you could be a star,
I know the Welsh economy’s terrible,
It’s not your fault your unemployed,
Some credentials would have helped,
That’s the reason I’m annoyed,
You threw your education away,
Just to have a giggle,
But now your chances of getting a job,
Are very incredibly little,
But the person you are,
Is one that makes me unbelievably proud,
From that rebellious teenager,
You have turned it right around,
No longer do you drink,
And you don’t do drugs,
And no longer do you associate,
With them idiotic thugs,
I’m glad you have started writing,
Everyday you write a poem,
And they keep on improving,
I love the talent you are showing,
Well that’s all I have to say,
I’ll now leave your past behind,
I’ll speak to you soon,
Yours dearly, your mind.

Corey, you are only 20 – it’s never too late. I took a degree with the Open Univeristy in my forties. You could do it now. You could take classes, courses. Don’t think it’s too late.
This was very poignant. Being a person you can be proud of sounds like a great place to start from my perspective.
It’s only to late when you close your eyes.

Lovely idea, to write a poem to yourself. It rang a bell for me. I could never resist doing dares at school, so finally got expelled, aged 15, without a qualification to my name. I went on to study and get plenty of qualifications later, but not until after the age of 28 when I found some things that interested me. Not that I do any of the things I trained for now. I just want to write and sing.
Just go for it, Corey. Your blog is great. You’ve so much enthusiasm and are great a bringing people together. So much talent.
Ahh yes, I too philandered about through high school, skipping class, smoking pot, getting in to trouble, fooling around, dropped out, reenrolled, transferred, buckled down, gave up, then tried again and finally did graduate, (and only one year late…) And through it all, although I find myself sometimes kicking my own ass for it, I fear my life would have ended up a lot more boring had I not done all of those things. 🙂

Great poem, great message. Never too late to start making positive changes in our life. Its always good to write about yourself, put the note in the closet for a year and come back to it after the time has passed. See what changes and progress you’ve made in just one year? I agree that unemployment sucks, but even if you had a degree you might be unemployed, so don’t judge yourself for that. But if you want to get a degree, what’s stopping you? Or become a professional poet! Either way, you’re young, do what you want but keep your end goal in mind, whether that be employment or schooling or what have you. Just don’t let life pass you by while you’re wondering if things could have/should have been different. You are who you are and you are what you have done. Get a role model or set a goal and you can start changing your life the way you want yourself to be.
I love this poem! I am around your age and people always tell me that the world is your oyster. You can do anything you put your mind to, so if you want to do something then just do it. If you want to go back and study, then go. If you want to travel the world, then get the money together and do it. It may take a bit of time to get there but if its want you want you will get there no matter what it takes.

I’ve recently been going through a stage where I’ve been writing letters {sometimes in poem form, sometimes not} to myself… it’s rather therapeutic, don’t you find?

Hey Corey-Really enjoyed the poem. Can relate to the regret. I ditched a class at high school to have a free period for cafe lates with a friend I never saw once I graduated. Just one critique. You have two instances of you’re that you need to change to your. You’re is a contraction for you are. Your means to belong.
Thanks for pointing that out! Microsoft word is terrible for giving you fake grammar mistakes! In many pieces of work I have done in the past it has told me to change it, its really starting to frustrate me now! 😦
We all have our little grammar typo’s. I struggle with apostrophes, I either omit them or use them incorrectly and grammar check is useless for that.
I could definitely stand to be proud of who I am, leave my past alone and work with my future with the cards I actually have. Thanks for the encouragement, whether intended or not, I’m definitely inspired! 🙂
When/ if we compare ourselves to other’s we can always look like failures or like geniuses…it’s not hard. The truly inspiring thing to do, which you have done, is to admit your mistakes, and realize where your true gifts lay. You have a way with words and you engage other’s to a point that they want to respond to you…that’s a rare feat in fact. Continue to inspre others and soon you’ll find yourself influencing others in a way you would have never dreamed. You’re on the right track!! 🙂

I really like this. I should write a letter to myself.
1st – thanks for following my little blog. I too love writing poems and rhyming.
2nd – you have such a way with words. You are very gifted and its probably a part of your purpose.
3rd – now that you’ve realized the mistakes you have made in the past, you can change it now so that you would like the future you will enter into.
You are still very young. It’s never too late to go back to school and learn again. I’m sure you will do great in whatever you do! 🙂

Letter to myself…one of those things that I have just thought about but never done. Glad to have read someone who put this idea to paper, and in such a funny way too. Brings in some harsh realities ( without really bothering too much about them). The reflective, mocking tone…I enjoyed this.
